Culture Bazaar

Culture Bazaar 2011

Culture Bazaar 2011 will be on Sunday 3rd July at the Richard Rose Academy...very exciting new venue.

Organised by Multicultural Carlisle, the fifth free annual event will bring together different communities from different ethnic minority groups across the city of Carlisle including Egyptian, Caribbean, Thai and Nepalese to share their cuisine, music, dance, sports and crafts.

Different cultures will be celebrated on Sunday, 3 July 2011 through music, dance, clothing, art, food and beliefs to promote the identity and to visually share the vibrancy of cultures in Cumbria.

Saj Ghafoor, founder of Culture Bazaar and owner of the HDM Spice Shop, Brook Street, Carlisle was delighted with how the 2010 event went. She said:

"I think it's popular because it's different and it's very grass roots – it's just ordinary people coming together,”

"The emphasis for the day is to attract locals from white and ethnic minority members of the community and to give people the chance to see, feel and taste the culture mix from another's perspective. I'm delighted to see how far we have come in the past five years. "It is a fun day with a very important message – life is full of different people and the world would be a very boring place if it wasn't. Everyone is welcome – dress up in saris or kilts, but most importantly come with a spirit of fun and all that represents friendship.”

"We are just trying to build community cohesion and there's no better way of doing it than something where there's no language barriers – it's about music, food, dance and art. Everybody, no matter what language they speak, no matter what nationality they are or what age group can enjoy it.”

"It's great to see all the different people from different communities engaging with each other. It's the only way we are ever going to help people to understand what's going on is to get people mixing. It's like a big party.”

The event is organised by Multicultural Carlisle, a group of committed volunteers focussed on celebrating cultural diversity in the Carlisle area.

Funding is provided by various organisations that support and encourage community cohesion and celebrate diversity of culture.

Volunteers are needed to help on the day. Contact Liz Staffell at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
